Das modernistische Programm der Rationalisierung der gestalterischen Praxis nahm zwischen zwei Generationen von Konstruktivisten in den 1930er und 1960er Jahren eine entschieden bürokratische Wendung. Von Paris bis Cambridge gingen Malerinnen, Dichter, Designerinnen und Architekten mit Nachdruck daran, den Code des künstlerischen Genies zu knacken, in der Hoffnung, die Schaffung besserer Umgebungen zu demokratisieren, wobei sie ein wachsendes Repertoire algorithmischer Techniken förderten. Die Motivation für den Einsatz dieser neuen Techniken resultierte aus dem Versuch, Kunst und Architektur im Sinne serieller Effekte zu verstehen. Durch die Neuformulierung ihrer Disziplinen mithilfe im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Managements entwickelter Verfahren des Flussdiagramms vollzogen Künstlerinnen und Architekten einen Paradigmenwechsel, der ein lange gehegter Traum der Moderne war: Sie ersetzten Komposition durch Organisation als Grundlage der Gestaltung.
