Tight and attractive later printing of this memoir by "Newsweek" magazine's long-time chief congressional correspondent (1910-95) -- with superb presentation inscription from him in black fineline filling more than half the front flyleaf: "To Adlai Stevenson, / a good Senator and a / man of conscience. I am / sorry to see you leave the / Senate. The nation will feel / the loss. / I covered your father's / two campaigns for the / Presidency and had a hard / time clinging to my / journalistic objectivity / because I was so fond / of him. / Samuel Shaffer." Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021) served as U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1970 to 1981, and his father, Illinois governor Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), ran against Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956.
