The photographs show horse drawn carriages only and unpaved roads, no buildings outside the city walls, and wooden houses at the Jaffa Gate. The pressed flowers are in good condition for their age and rather more elaborate, careful arrangements with some color retained than is usually found. There are as always a few minor losses to tips of some arrangements but all are pleasing in design. 1 volume. Hardcover.

The title page bears the legend âRemembrance from the British soldiers conqueror of the Holy Land,â and the views include Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Garden of Gethsemane, and Bethlehem. In very good condition. Pressed-flower albums of the Holy Land, bound in olive wood and filled with flowers gathered from biblical sites, were popular devotional souvenirs produced in Jerusalem from the late nineteenth century through the years of the British Mandate. Following General Allenby?s capture of Jerusalem in 1917 and the end of Ottoman rule, such albums were often carried home by British soldiers and pilgrims as remembrances of the Holy Land. Combining views of sacred sites, among them Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, and the Garden of Gethsemane, with real flowers pressed into decorative and religious designs, they are charming artifacts of early twentieth-century pilgrimage and of the era of the First World War in Palestine.

Undated but likely circa 1910. 24pp, with 12 printed photographs showing scenes from the Holy Land, each one accompanied on the opposite page with captioned, beautifully and symbolically arranged pressed flowers from the region, each one tissue-guarded. Bound in olive w…ood boards, deeply carved cross surrounded by coloured inlay on the front panel and the word 'Jerusalem' stamped above it. Bevelled edges. Landscape 8vo (approximately 8.5 by 11 inches). . Backstrip absent and hinges cracked, loosening wooden panels to almost detached. Wood is a little rubbed on edges, with small white mark in lower leading corner. Internally there's some browning and spotting to pages, especially in margins, the front free endpaper has been creased over the lower leading corner, cracking the card. Title page has a short tear close to the gutter and some small stained scuffs. Tissue guards are a little browned and spotted. A souvenir from the Holy Land a remarkable and beautiful artifact, likely worthy of some restoration.
