The initials W.C.G. are inscribed in gold on the front cover (presumably the first owner). 16cm x 12cm. 206pp. The binding on the spine has loosened, and has been repaired with tape. There are distinct signs of wear, but the corners and edges are still quite sharp. The front endpaper has an ink inscription dated 1899. Internally, the book is clean, though the pages are a little tanned. All our 'Seller Images' show the actual item you will receive.

It is number 3351 in a collection of British authors published by Bernhard Tauchnitz, first published in 1899 but this issue appears to be from 1905, according to advertising material at rear Cover: white/cream paper with black lettering to all faces; clean and bright for its age, some sunning to spine and darkening to edges; rubbing to all edges and fraying to spine but all present. Internally: very clean and tightly bound; gift inscription to title page dated 1908; some darkening to page edges which appear to be neatly hand cut; overall in very good condition for a 110+ year old paper back. 206 pp. plus 32 pp advertising material.

Cover illustration by Norman Wilkinson. Kipling's account of the recently strengthened fleet of the British Royal Navy at the turn of the 20th century first appeared as a group of five articles in the Morning Post in November 1898. Allowed to join the Fleet at sea, Kipling here offers an intimate portrait of the ships and their crew.
