Hardcover with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XIII, 277 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, Buchrücken ausgeblichen, Flecken auf Kopf- und Vorderschnitt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz, vereinzelt Anstreichungen und Anmerkungen im Buch / dust jacket rubbed, spine faded, stains on head and fore-edge, pencil annotation on endpapers, occasional markings and annotations in book. - This is the first of two volumes dealing with the work of the Latin writers of the first and second centuries A.d. Edited by Professor D. R. Dudley, it consists of a varied collection of essays on the literary figures of the Silver Age of Latin literature. The Latin authors of the Silver Age had two handicaps in common: they lived under a capricious autocracy and they wrote under the shadow of the great Augustans. The contributors to this volume cover a wide range of writings which arose in response to this shared situation. The book includes essays on Seneca, as man and as philosopher, who diffused a popularized Stoicism through the media of tragedy and philosophical tracts. The views of Lucan on the Caesars are discussed, and the influence of this writer on English literature is assessed. There are chapters on structure in the satires of Persius, on translating Petronius, and an essay each on Statius and Martial. All these authors had a substantial influence on later European literature. The epigram, for example, a form perfected by Martial, was used by the English poet Dryden, and Petronius Satyriconthe torso of a gigantic novel of low life and conspicuous wasteis, in content, style and outlook, congenial to our times. This volume will therefore prove to be of considerable value to students of both Classical and later European literature. / Contents Editors Foreword T. A. DOREY and D. R. DUDLEY Introduction D. R. - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - CHAPTER I -- VESPASIANS AUCTORITAS ET MATE STAS -- The reign of Nero, the last of the Julio-Claudian emperors, was marked by extreme adulatio, by many superhuman honors for the ruler, particularly by the use of the radiate crown on the coinage. Nero had followed to a great extent the policy of the Hellenistic kings in setting himself up as a diviner ruler, quite as Caligula had done before him, and in spite of the damnation of his memory such an innovation as the radiate crown continued after him. His death marked the end of a great dynasty, and the civil strife of 69 was not a contest to secure the restoration of the republic but only to see which commander would be raised to the imperial dignity by his army. It was certainly clear that the successful candidate would himself found a new line of rulers, for only thus could Rome be spared civil war at the end of each reign. In turn, Galba, Otho, and Vitellius held for a fleeting moment the reins of power, but for so short a time that they could not develop a religious policy. Finally Fortune elevated to the throne the general of the Syrian army, T. Flavius Vespasianus, and we may consider him the real successor of the Julio-Claudians. -- It must be remembered that Vespasian, unlike the Julii, could not claim descent from the gods and Roman kings, for the Flavian family from the town of Reate in the Sabine country was obscure and without any ancestral portraits. He had himself been forced to mortgage his estates to his brother and also engage in trading in mules, evidently as a result of a costly official career. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Domitian ruled Rome for fifteen years, longer than many emperors who won gentler reputations. He restored temples, strengthened imperial authority, watched the frontiers, paid the army, built magnificently, and treated the throne as a serious instrument of power. Yet Rome remembered him as a tyrant. The younger son of Vespasian and brother of Titus, Domitian inherited the Flavian dynasty after years of being overlooked, restricted, and overshadowed. He came to power determined never again to be secondary. His reign brought discipline, majesty, religious restoration, moral enforcement, and administrative energy. It also brought suspicion, fear, informers, senatorial humiliation, and a palace atmosphere that eventually turned deadly. This book examines Domitian not as a simple monster, nor as a misunderstood hero, but as one of the most revealing emperors in Roman history. He was capable, intelligent, severe, and dangerous. He understood the army, the weakness of senatorial pretence, the fragility of succession, and the hard realities of imperial power. But he mistook obedience for trust and fear for security. From the violence of the Year of the Four Emperors to the rise of the Flavian house, from the shadow of Titus to the grandeur of the Palatine palace, from the German and Dacian frontiers to the Senate's posthumous condemnation, Domitian's life exposes the central danger of Roman monarchy: the empire could function outwardly while fear corroded its political heart. When Domitian was assassinated in AD 96, the Flavian dynasty ended with him. Rome moved on to Nerva and Trajan, but the warning remained. Domitian had shown that a ruler could build, govern, command, restore, and still be remembered above all for fear. DOMITIAN: The Last of the Flavians is a serious, readable account of power, paranoia, imperial majesty, and the price of ruling Rome without trust.
