SIGNED hardcover first edition - First printing. The first novel by this Michigan-raised author, one in which the protagonist - a 32 year old woman named Lewis Jones - bounces back and forth between New York City and Detroit in a world full of champagne and cocaine, weird sex, despair and hysteria, recounted in Jones' savagely witty voice. Championed by Gayl Jones, one of Toni Morrison's earlier authors at Random House, this was one of the last books edited by Morrison before she left to become a full-time writer. A presentation copy, warmly and personally INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "Pat, You have long seen to it that I look special when I feel special. I hope that you are pleased with my effort to speak, to move forward" and dated in 1984. In addition, this copy bears two signatures (on the front pastedown and on the title page) of the noted Filipino artist and political activist, David Medalla (1942-2020) whose work is currently being featured at the Hammer Museum at UCLA. 175 pp. Fair condition only in light green boards with a blue cloth spine, in a fair dust jacket (some water damage with bleeding from the spine to the interior of the dj, crinkling to the back cover of the dj, chip to top edge of front cover of dj) Still, despite the flaws this is an interesting and unique copy of an uncommon first edition with a great inscription, very appropriate to the theme of the book!.

Mystery writer Charlotte Carter said. "In Nettie's work there is a dreamy quality to it that pulls you in as well as the feeling that there is nothing between you and Lewis's voice. . Everything comes down to sex. It's the thing that gives life to you, destroys you. It's redemptive, it's religion, it's a yardstick to how liberal you are and how hip." Championed by Gayl Jones, one of Toni Morrison's earlier authors at Random House, this was one of the last books edited by Morrison before she left to become a full-time writer. 175 pp. Fine in light green boards with a blue cloth spine, gilt lettering in a very good dust jacket (short closed tear on front cover, small nick at top of spine, original price of 13.95 on dj flap).
