THe 1st Armored Division was born at Fort Knox, Kentucky on July 15, 1940. Its first commander was Major General Bruce Magruder. The unit was part of the landing force that arrived at Les Andalouses in North Africa in 1942. It was then deployed in the Italian campaign. It joined the battle of Anzio on the third day. It was action on the Arno and was part of the forces occupying Germany after the was. In 1946 the Division was deactivated. It was officially reactivated at Fort Hood on March 7, 1951 under Brigadier Genral Bruce Clarke. It played an important role in Exercise Longhorn and then supported operations in Korea. Fair.
