Quite nice copy of this late-career novel by Aldanov, set within the Soviet foreign service at the outbreak of WW2. Aldanov (1886-1957) published most of his literary work after emigrating from the Soviet Union in 1919. Most of his career was spent in France; from 1941-46 he lived in New York. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize (without ever winning) thirteen tmes.
