In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The present volume Field Theory, Quantum Gravity and Strings, II comprises for the lectures delivered in 1985/86 at a joint seminar of the DAPHE observatory at Meudon and the LPTHE University Paris VI. This set of lectures contains selected topics of current interest in field and particle theory, cosmology and statistical mechanics. Basic problems of string and superstring theory are treated in a contemporary perspective, and quantum field theoretical as well as string approaches to cosmology are presented. Recent progress on integrable theories and related subjects in two, four and more dimensions is reviewed. This seminar on current developments in mathematical physics addresses researchers as well as graduate students.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 256 pp. Englisch.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - One of the most challenging problems of contemporary theoretical physics is the mathematically rigorous construction of a theory which describes gravitation and the other fundamental physical interactions within a common framework. The physical ideas which grew from attempts to develop such a theory require highly advanced mathematical methods and radically new physical concepts. This book presents different approaches to a rigorous unified description of quantum fields and gravity. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lively discussions which took place in autumn 2010 at the fifth conference 'Quantum field theory and gravity - Conceptual and mathematical advances in the search for a unified framework' in Regensburg, Germany. In the tradition of the other proceedings covering this series of conferences, a special feature of this book is the exposition of a wide variety of approaches, with the intention to facilitate a comparison. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - From August 21 through August 27, 1989 the Nato Advanced Research Workshop Probabilistic Methods in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity' was held at l'Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques, Cargese, France. This publication is the Proceedings of this workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together a group of scientists who have been at the forefront of the development of probabilistic methods in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity. The original thought was to put emphasis on the introduction of stochastic processes in the understanding of Euclidean Quantum Field Theory, with also some discussion of recent progress in the field of stochastic numerical methods. During the final preparation of the meeting we broadened the scope to include all those Euclidean Quantum Field Theory descriptions that make direct reference to concepts from probability theory and statistical mechanics. Several of the main contributions centered around a more rigorous discussion of stochastic processes for the formulation of Euclidean Quantum Field Theory. These rather stringent mathematical approaches were contrasted with the more heuristic stochastic quantization scheme developed in 1981 by Parisi and Wu: Stochastic quan tization, its intrinsic BRST -structure and stochastic regularization appeared in many disguises and in connection with several different problems throughout the workshop.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The geometrical and topological aspects of quantum field theory and gravity are covered in this monograph . It is well known that chiral anomaly, which is related to the persistence of axial vector current divergence, emerges from the interaction of a chiral fermion with a gauge field. The insight that this is tied to particular topological properties associated with the fermion leads to the realisation of the topological origin of the fermion number and the Berry phase. The participation of gauge fields in the quantization process has an impact on a fermion's topological properties, allowing us to conceptualise a big fermion as a soliton (skyrnion). It is found that mass formation in this formalisation is caused by chiral anomaly. This is significant because it clarifies how topological mass is acquired by weak interaction gauge bosons in electroweak theory. Finally, it has been shown that noncommutative geometry has its significance in the description of a large fermion as a skyrmion when the discrete space is thought of as the symmetry breaking causes chiral anomaly and the internal space.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 96 pp. Englisch.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book takes a pedagogical approach to explaining quantum gravity, supersymmetry and string theory in a coherent way. Itis aimed at graduate students and researchers in quantum field theory and high-energy physics. The first part of the book introduces quantum gravity, without requiring previous knowledge of general relativity (GR). The necessary geometrical aspects are derived afresh leading to explicit general Lagrangians for gravity, including that of general relativity. The quantum aspect of gravitation, as described by the graviton, is introduced and perturbative quantum GR is discussed. The Schwinger-DeWitt formalism is developed to compute the one-loop contribution to the theory and renormalizability aspects of the perturbative theory are also discussed. This follows by introducing only the very basics of a non-perturbative, background-independent, formulation of quantum gravity, referred to as 'loop quantum gravity', which gives rise to a quantization of space. In the second part the author introduces supersymmetry and its consequences. The generation of superfields is represented in detail. Supersymmetric generalizations of Maxwell's Theory as well as of Yang-Mills field theory, and of the standard model are worked out. Spontaneous symmetry breaking, improvement of the divergence problem in supersymmetric field theory, and its role in the hierarchy problem are covered. The unification of the fundamental constants in a supersymmetric version of the standard model are then studied. Geometrical aspects necessary to study supergravity are developed culminating in the derivation of its full action. The third part introduces string theory and the analysis of the spectra of the mass (squared) operator associated with the oscillating strings. The properties of the underlying fields, associated with massless particles, encountered in string theory are studied in some detail. Elements of compactification, duality and D-branes are given, as well of the generation of vertices and interactions of strings. In the final sections, the author shows how to recover GR and the Yang-Mills field Theory from string theory.
