Neuware - This thesis experimentally tests and evaluates programmable logic devices under gamma irradiation to determine radiation effects and characterize improvements of various hardening by design techniques - Error Correction Coding(ECC) and Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). The TMR circuit includes… three different functional implementations of adders compared to TMR voted circuits of those same adders. The TMR is implemented with the same functional adders and as a Functional TMR (FTMR) with three different function adders that are voted on. These adders are connected to single voter TMR and FTMR circuits to evaluate the improvements. The circuit is designed to check for errors in memory data, stuck bit values in the memory, and the performance improvements that ECC provides the system. The results show that TMR or FTMR circuits failed at a rate at or above the single copy adders. This results from the single point of failure created by the voting logic in the radiation environment. When the TMR or FTMR circuit is moved off-chip, the TMR single point of failure is removed and the results demonstrate much lower SEU error rates.

Neuware - As Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) become more widely used, security concerns have been raised regarding FPGA use for cryptographic, sensitive, or proprietary data. Storing or implementing proprietary code and designs on FPGAs could result in compromise of sensitive information if the…FPGA device was physically relinquished or remotely accessible to adversaries seeking to obtain the information. Although multiple defensive measures have been implemented (and overcome), the possibility exists to create a secure design through the implementation of polymorphic Dynamically Reconfigurable FPGA (DRFPGA) circuits. Using polymorphic DRFPGAs removes the static attributes from their design; thus, substantially increasing the difficulty of successful adversarial reverse-engineering attacks. A variety of dynamically reconfigurable methodologies exist for implementations that challenge designers in the reconfigurable technology field. A Hardware Description Language (HDL) DRFPGA model is presented for use in security applications. The Very High Speed Integrated Circuit HDL(VHSIC)language was chosen to take advantage of its capabilities, which are well suited to the current research. Additionally, algorithms that explicitly support granular autonomous reconfiguration have been developed and implemented on the DRFPGA as a means of protecting its designs. Documented testing validated the reconfiguration results, compared original FPGA and DRFPGA, security, power usage, and area estimates.

Neuware - The high cost of failure for microelectronic devices operating in the space environment has led to a need for an accurate characterization of a device's reliability prior to being deployed. In addition, significant cost savings can be achieved by determining this reliability prior to fabrication. Hi…gh performance and flexibility requirements for many space applications have led to an integration of small feature-sized field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) into system designs. Specifically, feature sizes as small as 130, 90, and 65 nm. In this research, a characterization of the space environment is constructed specifically to address the typical conditions that can affect the performance and functionality of small feature-sized FPGAs, centered on temperature, non-ideal supply voltage, and radiation effects. A simulation technique is developed to determine the reliability of a microelectronic device prior to fabrication and deployment into the space environment. The technique is based on identifying the key elements of a circuit, simulating these key elements under each characterized condition individually, and then a comprehensive simulation of the elements under all enumerated combinations of the characterized conditions at the transistor-level using the HSPICE device simulation tool. Reliability calculations are performed based on simulation results and identified critical performance criteria. A demonstration of the technique is accomplished showing the poor reliability of non-radiation hardened small feature-sized commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) FPGAs in four common satellite orbits around the earth. The results are then compared to an established, radiation hardened FPGA.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
