This book presents texts of cultural and literary interest in the English-speaking tradition, often for the first time since their original publication. Most of the writers represented in the series were well known and hihgly regarded until the professionalization of English studies in the later ninteenth century coincided with their excision from canonical status and from the marjority of literary histories. 170 pp. ( We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing and soiling. $250. * First edition. "When Sarah Cornell was found hanging from the frame of a haystack in Tiverton, Rhode Island, it might easily have been called suicide but for a note she had left in her bandbox saying, 'If I should be missing, enquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery, of Bristol,--he will know where I am.' This was the beginning of the Reverend's troubles and one of the most famous nineteenth-century cases" (McDade). The evidence against Avery in the court of public opinion was damning: Cornell was five months pregnant and Avery had been seen in the vicinity of the haystack on the day of her death. After a 27-day trial, however, he was acquitted. McDade notes that "while the verdict was undoubtedly sound on the evidence as presented, there is still enough doubt to make the case an interesting one for conjecture," and many writers took advantage of this opportunity. Williams, the author of this highly detailed, though somewhat romanticized account was a Rhode Island writer, poet and woman's suffrage activist. The work was reissued in 1834. McDade, The Annals of Murder 40 (and annotation to item 33).

Second edition. Second edition. Woodcut frontispiece of "A View of Mr. Durfee's Farm-House and Stack-Yard" where the body was found. 1 vols. 16mo. MURDERED BY THE MINISTER! Sarah Cornell, a devout Methodist and mill weaver, was molested by a Methodist minister at a camp meeting, pregnancy ensued followed shortly by death. This is the story of the murder investigation, testimonies of the witnesses, clues, background and showing how the murderer was protected by the church he represented and whitewashed while she, representing also women mill-workers as a group, was blackened and cheapened. The adverse effect of the case on the town and the people involved, as well as the extremes the Methodist church was willing to go to to protect their representative, with bribery, threats and lies are exposed as are the abuses of the legal system involved. The minister went free. The author compiled the information and did her own research to expose this case of misjustice and ministerial abuse of trust. It was interesting also in showing how people then, as today, come forth as witnesses for the attention and recognition. The minister was so over-alibied that more time was accounted for than in the given time segment questioned. An interesting work of criminology and people. S & S 29754; Wright Fiction 2721 Original cloth-backed boards, printed paper label, some spotting and rubbing, generally light, spotting of text mostly at front and back.
