Boards have been heavily rub worn with heavy shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a heavily frayed and spine ends are crushed, with some small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

An early edition of this dramatic play, written in poetic form, about the the Romans and Jews during the fall of Jerusalem.Written by nineteenth-century English historian and ecclesiastic, Henry Hart Milman. Born in London, he was the son of Sir Francis Milman, 1st Baronet, physician to King George III. A successful student, he went on to become Professor of Poetry at Oxford university. He later worked his way up through the ranks of religious order, to become the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral. Milman died in 1868, and is buried at St Paul's Cathedral.Bound in full calf with gilt detailing to the spine and boards, including the half title.Containing the bookplate of Edward Hodge to the front pastedown.Containing the ink signature of a previous owner to the title page. This dramatic fable theatrically portrays the catastrophic destruction of the second Jewish temple, exploring the theme of rebellious Jerusalem, which fell to the Roman forces in the year 70. Characters include the Romans Terentius Rufus, Caius Placidus, and Diagoras a Stoic philosopher. As well as the Jews Simon the Assassin, Ben Cathla Leader of the Edmomites and Abiram a false Prophet. Milman was an ordained minister who became dean of St. Paul's, he was best known however, for his scholarly achievements. He translated Sanskrit poetry, and wrote several works of religious history, including a "History of the Jews" and a "History of Christianity under the Empire," both of which approached their subject matter with historical precision and rational detachment. In decorative calf binding with gilt lettering and design to the spine. Externally, a trifle rubbed to boards and extremities. Internally, firmly bound with bright pages. Some scattered light spotting. Very Good. book.

He was long known for his poetry and dramatic writings. This dramatic poem describes the siege of 70AD and also depicts the conflict between" the Jewish conservatism and new truth" (DNB). Hayday binding. Maroon straight-grained morocco gilt by Hayday for Hatchards & Son, all edges gilt. Joints and extremities rubbed, head of spine chipped and stained, some spotting and marginal staining, else very good with the bookplate of William Montagu Baillie.

Old ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Small marginal loss to p.31, some light toning and occassional light spotting, joints rubbed and just starting but strong, generally a very good copy in a handsome binding. Milman's dramatic poem on the Fall of Jerusalem, first published earlier in the same year (1820). "The groundwork of the poem is to be found in Josephus, but the events of a considerable time are compressed into a period of about 36 hours" (Introduction). "The Fall of Jerusalem quickly caught the public attention, and was crowned with most general applause. The subject had a strong hold on our sympathies" (Dibdin's Library Companion). Henry Hart Milman (1791 1868) was an English historian and ecclesiastic.
