N.d., c.1890. Previous owner's inscription (dated Christmas 1900) front free endpaper, endpapers toned, otherwise clean. Corners lightly bumped, head and foot of spine lightly rubbed. Very good condition. An attractive circa 1899 edition of a comprehensive collection of Aesop's ancient fables featuring anthropomorphised animals, copiously illustrated with 110 engraved illustrations. With added "morals, applications" by George Fyler Townsend (1814?1900). Townsend's edition of Aesop's fables introduced the practice of stating a succinct moral at the conclusion of each story, and continues to be influential.
