Soft cover. Zustand: New. The upsurge of militant Hindu nationalism in the recent past has brought to the fore questions of who a Hindu is, what Hinduism is and what Hindutva and Hinduism mean to Hindus. If Hindutva is a way of life, who are its followers? And for those who are, how necessary is it that its practice should prevail upon all others? These are questions of great relevance in today s India. This book goes beyond the existing enquiry into Hindu identity, nationalism and culture, through the writings of thinkers Dayananda Saraswati, Sri Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. With characteristic academic rigour and research, Jyotirmaya Sharma offers us original insights into the intellectual traditions that have nourished political Hindutva. The book calls for revisiting those traditions in which Hinduism is seen as being more inclusive and self-critical, at times even of its own fundamental premises.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2014 in the subject History - Miscellaneous, grade: 68, University of Strathclyde, course: History, language: English, abstract: Exploring the origins of Arab nationalism is a challenging project. To assess this particular subject is to enter a huge arena of discussion; the multifaceted nature of the word 'nationalism' itself - which as Z. Lockman notes 'always means different things to people in different contexts' - presents difficulties when engaging the subject from a variety of different historical perspectives. The objective of this essay will be to assess several aspects surrounding the genesis of Arab Nationalism in the Middle East from various political, cultural and intellectual dimensions in order to gather a basic understanding as to when and why this movement occurred. Complications emerge in such a study when one considers that the genesis of this movement was by no means a single and stable birth of ideas overnight, but rather a fragmented series of awakenings, occurring across the Arab heartlands at different times and for slightly varying reasons from surrounding neighbours. For example, Egypt presents an interesting case. J. Jankowski notes the nationalist movement of the Egyptians to pre-date collective Arab nationalism by roughly a generation and recognises the Egyptian variant of nationalism to be a distinct and separate phenomenon which gathered strength from the 1870s onward. The area's historical and cultural distinctiveness from that of her neighbours meant she appeared to work against rather than for 'Arab' orientation and instead focused upon her own individual ideals in promoting 'Egypt for the Egyptians.' As separate instances of territorial nationalism such as the case of Egypt illuminate, no definitive answers to the question of what caused nationalism to occur may accurately represent the Arab community as an entirety. However, by assessing general factors which bound the Arab peoples together in spirit as one, this essay will attempt to piece together a basic understanding of what pushed an undercurrent of Arab awareness to the surface in the early decades of the 20th century.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - '.examines how patriotism can warp into aggressive nationalism and its close cousin irredentist nationalism.' - Historical Miniatures Gaming SocietyIn a compelling exploration of nationalism's darker facets, this book delves into the aggressive, expansionist strain that has fueled conflict and suffering throughout human history. While nationalism is often linked to modernity, the author traces its roots back to humanity's earliest recorded eras, revealing how elements such as racialism, ethnicity, language, religion, and culture have historically ignited aggressive nationalism.Drawing from a sweeping analysis of over 33 European countries, the book examines the common experiences of nations from their tribal beginnings to the current age of superpowers. While acknowledging that some forms of nationalism--like secessionism and irredentism--may serve as legitimate expressions of self-defense, the primary focus remains on the destructive impulse to invade and dominate neighbouring lands. This work is not just a historical study; it serves as a cautionary tale for the present day. With 2024 as its backdrop, the author connects historical patterns to contemporary issues, warning of the resurgence of extreme right-wing ideologies across the globe. This thought-provoking examination urges readers to confront the past's lessons, emphasizing that history is not merely a record of what has been, but a vital lens through which to understand our present and shape a more peaceful future.
