Watson was one of the premier pioneers of electrical science; this extensive letter to President Martin Folkes outlines his early breakthrough experiments with static electricity, tracking atmospheric conditions, and his famous feats of igniting spirits of wine via "repulsive power". In 1745 he was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society for his electrical research.
