Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Experiments and Observations on the Atomic Theory and Electrical Phenomena is a scientific book written by William Higgins and published in 1814. The book is a collection of experiments and observations made by Higgins on the atomic theory and electrical phenomena. The book is divided into th…ree parts, with the first part discussing the atomic theory and the second part discussing electrical phenomena. The third part of the book is a collection of experiments conducted by Higgins to support his theories. In the first part of the book, Higgins discusses the atomic theory and its implications on the behavior of matter. He proposes that all matter is made up of small, indivisible particles called atoms, which are in constant motion and interact with one another. Higgins also discusses the different properties of atoms, such as their size, weight, and chemical reactivity. In the second part of the book, Higgins explores electrical phenomena, including the behavior of electric charges and the properties of electric fields. He discusses the different types of electric charges and how they interact with one another, as well as the properties of electric fields and their effects on matter. The third part of the book is a collection of experiments conducted by Higgins to support his theories on the atomic theory and electrical phenomena. These experiments include observations of the behavior of gases under different conditions, as well as experiments on the behavior of electric charges and electric fields.Overall, Experiments and Observations on the Atomic Theory and Electrical Phenomena is a significant contribution to the field of science, providing valuable insights into the behavior of matter and electrical phenomena. The book is still relevant today, and its ideas have influenced the development of modern physics and chemistry. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Rare in commerce, the last copy appearing at auction in 1980. William Higgins (1763-1825) was born in Ireland but moved to London in 1784 where his uncle Bryan Higgins was a doctor and chemist. Higgins then attended Oxford and although he left without a degree he worked as an assistant to the Professor of Chemistry and carried out his own experiments in the basement laboratory of the old Ashmolean Museum. In 1789, he published a ground-breaking work on combustion which, tangentially and incidentally, anticipated John Dalton's atomic theory. In 1792 Higgins returned to Ireland where he divided his time between a job as chemist to the Irish Linen Board advising on bleaching and dying and a position at the Royal Dublin Society where he was given freedom to carry out experiments in a laboratory equipped to his specifications. It was during these years that Higgins developed and crystallised his ideas on atomic theory leading to the publication of the present provocative book in 1814 in which he implied that John Dalton's 1808 work New Systems of Chemical Philosophy had plagiarised his experiments. Higgins was working and writing at a time of great activity and important developments in the field of atomic theory and his role and influence continues to be debated by scientists today.
