The first edition of this work "Lehrbuch der experimentalphysik" appeared in 1893 and went through many editions as a textbook focused on higher schools. The first English language edition was published in 1899. While unclear which German edition this is based on, the book includes an introductory preface for the first three editions. While the third edition preface notes the addition of a plate spectra of the sun, we find no such plate referenced in OCLC/Worldcat, our example, or in Stanford's copy. The translator notes that Lommel "has pursued the experimental method almost exclusively, throughout the portion of the text given in coarse text" [ occasionally much more technical discussions are offered in a finer text ] The goal of the translator was to make this method available to a wider audience in the American market.
