Christie's The History of Quantum Physics and the Theory of Relativity: The Harvey Plotnick Library, 101. A scientific history for a casual reader, intended to explain the history of the evolution of famous theories in physics. The authors devote a section to the decline of the mechanical view, and proceed to explain their work on Relativity and Quanta. Einstein was famous for writing books intended to educate the public on his work and on the history of science. This volume is an example of his noble goal in making physics accessible to all readers. Erstausgabe
First Edition. 19,5 cm, x + 319 p. Original blue cloth binding. 'The book is a simple chat between you and us. You may find it boring or interesting, dull or exciting, but our aim will be accomplished if these pages give you some idea of the eternal struggle of the inventive human mind for a fuller understanding of the laws governing physical phenomena.' (The authors, from the preface). Infeld, despite his gifts as a physicist, despite the joint work on the equation of motion, and despite Einstein's own efforts on his behalf, was unable to find a position in America. To help him Einstein collaborated with him on a book, «The evolution of physics», that was published in 1938. It described for the layman the majestic development of physical science as seen by the man who had revolutionized scientific thought while maintaining a striking continuity with the broad sweep of the past. The book was an immediate success - was translated into several languages at once - and with its success Einstein said to Infeld: 'You are a made man'. Undoubtedly the book played no small part in Infeld's obtaining a position in Canada. (B. Hoffmann, Einstein p. 233). Weil 201; Schilpp-Shields 279; Alicke 278/159.
