Stephen Venables, Paul Teare, Edward Webster and Robert Anderson set off to ascend Everest by a new route via the Kangshung Face from Tibet. The climbing team reached as far as the South Col when Teare descended due to worsening altitude sickness. Webster and Anderson retreated at the South Summit, leaving Venables alone to reach the summit at 3.40 PM. Venables feared falling in the dark on his descent and decided to camp alone overnight at 8,600 metres and reunite with his companions in the morning.
