231 x 146 mm. 8vo. xii, 122, [ads 2] pp. Blind-stamped maroon cloth, gilt spine; rubbed, spine and extremities faded. Bookplate of Sydney Ross. Very good. This book was published posthumously by Charles Hargreave's wife. Hargreave's "attention was again drawn to a new method of solving algebraic equations, and he commenced an essay on this question. Want of rest brought on an exhaustion of the brain, from which he died at Bray, near Dublin, 23 April 1866." DNB. Charles Hargreave was a lawyer, judge, and mathematician. A native of Yorkshire, Hargreave took the LL.B. at the University of London. Hargreave was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1844. Having served as professor of jurisprudence in University College, he went to Ireland in 1849, as one of a court of three commissioners under the Encumbered Estates Act. Hargreave pursued mathematics as an avocation; an early paper entitled "On the solution of linear differential equations" was published in the Philosophical Transactions in 1848 and won him the gold medal of the Royal Society. Hargreave was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1848. DNB, VIII, pp. 1263-1264.
