Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Political Works of Daniel Defoe is a compelling collection that encapsulates the author's keen insights into the socio-political landscape of early 18th-century England. Defoe's literary style is characterized by its prose ethics and satirical edge, revealing the complexities of political debates through pamphlets and treatises. The work is deeply contextual, emerging from the tumultuous period marked by political intrigue, the rise of individualism, and the formation of modern political thought. Readers will encounter Defoe's reflections on governance, liberty, and economic theory, all articulated with a distinct voice that merges clarity with persuasive argumentation. Daniel Defoe, a pioneering novelist and pamphleteer, was profoundly influenced by his experiences as a merchant, dissenter, and observer of political upheaval. His writings reflect not only a profound understanding of economic realities but also a commitment to political engagement, stemming from his varied experiences and dissident spirit. This mosaic of influences fuels Defoe's critical analysis of authority and public policy, positioning him as a crucial voice of his time. This collection is an essential read for anyone interested in the development of political thought and the evolution of journalism. Defoe's sharp wit and intellectual rigor offer contemporary reflections on civic duty and individualism, making this an indispensable resource for students and scholars alike.…

Menston, Scolar Press, 1969. XIV,336 pp. Hardcover.A Scolar Press facsimile of the original edition of 1697. - A non-fiction work written by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1697, and one of Defoe's earliest publications, containing numerous proposals for social and economic improvements in England. Defoe discusses various "projects" or proposals, including improvements in banking, insurance, road maintenance, and the establishment of academies. He advocated in particular for education for women, a pension system for the poor, and care for the mentally ill. Written around 1692-1693 and published in 1697, it reflects his perspective as a merchant and his interest in practical, progressive solutions for society. The introduction to the work notes that Defoe's suggestions were often far ahead of their time, and that some ideas were not realized until long after his death. …

First edition of Defoe's first book, his earliest major contribution to political and social thought. This tract is scarce in commerce: we trace four auction records over the past 60 years. In the early 17th century, those who advanced proposals to reform state or society were often scorned as self-interested charlatans on the fringes of respectability. The Essay upon Projects reflects the shift in that view by the turn of the 18th century, acknowledging the widespread enthusiasm for schemes of all kinds. By 1697, Defoe had survived one bankruptcy, escaped punishment for supporting the Monmouth Rebellion, and made a series of highly speculative investments in such areas as diving technology. He was therefore sympathetic to the upswing in enthusiasm for projects, and, as an accountant in the civil service of William III, better placed than most to comment on their institutional application. His own proposals range across finance, infrastructure, and social problems: his recommendations for naval recruitment eventually led to an invitation to speak before a parliamentary committee.
