In den WarenkorbFour Volumes. Vols. I and II are 1854 first printings, vols. III and IV 1878 reprints; presenting as a uniform set. Handsomely bound by Riviere & Son in full polished calf. The boards double-ruled in gilt with corner devices; the spines with five raised bands, the compartments finely decorated in gilt, as are board edges and inner dentelles. Top edge gilt, endpapers marbled. Frontispiece engravings to each volume all with tissue-guards, Vol. IV with an additional frontispiece illustration of Goldsmith's memorial at Westminster Abbey. A fine set, the bindings square and firm, the contents clean and bright, without marks or spotting. Small bookseller's label to the lower edge of the front pastedown of Vol. I. There are a few surface marks to the boards, the upper portion of the front panel of Vol. IV is a little faded. A beautiful set. Peter Cunningham's 1854 edition of Goldsmith's Works was the first to take full account of the author's own corrections and attempt to present the texts as the author left them. In his preface, Cunningham discusses the merits and problems of earlier, less comprehensive, editions of Goldsmith's writings, notably those of 1801 (containing Thomas Percy's Life of Goldsmith) and Sir James Prior's 1837 edition. (Arthur Friedman, 'Goldsmith', The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature, [Cambridge: 1969], pp. 1191-1210). In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. viii, 200; contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, spine lettered in gilt. First edition of Goldsmith's first major work. He had been planning it for some time, and even wrote to his cousin in August 1758 that it was 'now printing', which cannot have been true, because at that point it was to be called An Essay on the Present State of Taste and Literature in Europe, and the book as printed shows no sign of that title. In the event, the book was not published until early April 1759, when it was given quite a lot of coverage by the London magazines; however, most of them (especially the Monthly, with whose publisher, Ralph Griffiths, he had quarrelled) gave it bad reviews. There was a second edition published in 1774, just after Goldsmith's death but clearly based on his own revisions. Friedman prints the 1759 text, commenting that 'The first edition is of great interest as the first book that Goldsmith wrote, and the passages in it omitted from [the 1774 edition] are among the most interesting in the work'. Friedman I pp. 245-50; Williams, Seven XVIIth century bibliographies, p. 119; Rothschild 1020. Provenance. Early ownership inscription on half title of Paul Panton.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Second edition, revised and corrected. viii, 157 p. 18 cm. Half leather with purple cloth. Initials F. W. C. on front. Corners worn, spine label chipping, cracks in upper hinges. Bookplate for Mr. H. F. Combs on front pastedown. Small ink notations, stains. Some foxing. Ink note on p. vii. Originally published in 1759, this second edition, published a few months after Goldsmith's death, shows more extensive alterations than any other revision by Goldsmith. There are stylistic changes, rearrangements of material, omitted sentences and paragraphs (with the apparent intention of shortening the book) and the addition of a few transitional sentences (Friedman I 249).
