First Dublin edition. Two volumes. 8vo. xiii, [23], 411, [1]; [24], 424 pp. With the half titles. Contemporary calf, flat spines panelled with simple blind rules, second and fourth panels lettered in gilt on red and black morocco labels (faint browning to endpapers and occasionally throughout, corners very slightly bumped, light wear to extremities and some faint scuffing to covers, notwithstanding a very good set, unsophisticated in simple but pleasing contemporary bindings). Dublin, Luke White. The first Dublin edition, published in the same year in as the first edition quarto and octavo editions in London, using the same sheets as the first London octavo edition, but issued with a different title page. One of the most radical and far-reaching political tracts of the era, by the father of British philosophical radicalism. Published just weeks after the execution of Louis XVI, and written in response to Burke?s Reflections, Godwin?s tract ?one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine? (PMM). It attacks all restraints on the exercise of individual judgement ? in the belief that human opinions will become progressively more enlightened with the growth of knowledge. Among Godwin?s targets were established religion and marriage, and he believed that government itself would ultimately become unnecessary. Godwin?s Political Justice directly provoked Thomas Malthus to write his Essay on the Principle of Population (1798). PMM, 243 (first edition).

First Irish Edition (published the same year as the London first) of this famous and influential work, which established Godwin as the chief philosophical representative of English radicalism. In it Godwin calls for the abolition of all organized politics, religion and society, and advocates the ascendancy of reason as the guiding light in human affairs. "It was one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine. Godwin believed that the motives of all human action were subject to reason, and that reason taught benevolence, and that therefore all rational creatures could live in harmony without laws and institutions.marriage and parental duty were alike irrational, and property the worst form of tyranny.Godwin's passionate advocacy of individualism, his trust in the fundamental goodness of man, and his opposition to all restrictions of liberty, have endured." "The Enquiry was, and remained, the work by which [Godwin] was best known. It was one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine. Godwin believed that the motives of all human action were subject to reason, that reason taught benevolence, and that therefore all rational creatures could live in harmony without laws and institutions. Believing in the perfectibility of man, he thought that âour virtues and vices may be traced to the incidents which make the history of our lives, and if these incidents could be divested of every improper tendency, vice would be extirpated from the world'. All control of man by man was intolerable and âgovernment by its very nature counteracts the improvement of original mind'. The time would come, he maintained, when every man, by doing what seemed right in his own eyes, would also be doing what was best for all men, because all, through discussion, would be guided by purely rational principles.Godwin's passionate advocacy of individualism, his trust in the fundamental goodness of man, and his opposition to all restrictions on liberty, have endured' (Printing and the Mind of Man, regarding first edition). Erstausgabe
First edition of one of the most radical and far-reaching books of the years of revolution at the end of the 18th century, widely seen as the foundation of philosophical anarchism. Published just weeks after the execution of Louis XVI, Godwin's tract attacks all restraints on the exercise of individual judgement - in the belief that human opinions will become progressively more enlightened with the growth of knowledge. Among Godwin's targets were established religion and marriage, and he believed that government itself would ultimately become redundant. The book still speaks today for its eloquent defence of human liberty, but its contemporary influence was profound and lasting. Godwin, for all his lack of worldly success, was the epicentre of English radicalism. He subsequently married the most discussed, admired, criticized, and mythologized feminist intellectual in history, Mary Wollstonecraft; inspired and infuriated Percy Bysshe Shelley, who bankrolled him, then eloped with his daughter Mary, future author of Frankenstein; and published, among many others, Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare and works illustrated by William Blake. As a text Political Justice had one hugely influential if contrary result: it directly inspired Malthus to formulate his Essay on Population. Hazlitt, The Free Man's Library, p. 77; Printing and the Mind of Man 243; Rothschild 1016. Two volumes bound in 1, quarto (277 x 211 mm). Recent full calf, spine with raised bands, direct lettered gilt, sprinkled edges. Complete with the half-titles and the final errata/binder's leaf, latter bound at front of first volume following contents. Slight rubbing to binding, light browning and fraying at head of first few leaves, early ink splashing to first couple gatherings, some light toning, spotting and the occasional light stain; a good copy.
