George Malcolm Thomson, later himself to write a book about Mary Stuart, wrote to Baring, "I am jealous that this book, so nobly felt, so finely phrased, with its subject the most famous of Scotswomen, was not written by a Scot." John Buchan in The Spectator, praising Baring's portrait, said, "I for one think that he has come very near the truth".
