Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 8vo (21.5 cm), XII, 228 pp. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards with corners, gilt-lettered spine (binding slightly rubbed at extremities; endpapers somewhat toned; occasional foxing inside). First edition. An early and important textbook exposition of complex function theory by the Professor of Mathematics at the Polytechnikum in Prague, written with the explicit aim of making Riemann's then-recent and revolutionary ideas accessible in systematic form. The preface, noting the transformative significance of Riemann's work for both pure and applied mathematics, draws also on Riemann's printed dissertations, his lectures, Cauchy and Puiseux's work on complex functions, and papers in Schlömilch's Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Physik and Liouville's journal. The twelve sections progress from the geometric representation of imaginary quantities and the four algebraic operations in the complex plane, through functions of a complex variable in general (Cauchy-Riemann conditions, conformal mapping), multivalued functions and branch points, Riemann surfaces and winding points, integrals with complex variables and their dependence on path, the logarithm and exponential function, general properties of functions, functions without branch points and their behaviour at infinity, integrals over closed lines, periodicity moduli, simply and multiply connected surfaces, determination of connectivity, and concludes with the topological relation q = g ? 2(n?1) for closed Riemann surfaces. A good copy of significant early textbook on Riemannian function theory, predating most of the standard later treatments.
