Welche Schäden entstehen durch Kriechen an anderen mechanischen Eigenschaften? Und lässt sich die Lebensdauer durch eine erneute Wärmebehandlung während des Betriebs verlängern? Freeman konzentrierte sich dabei auf die Schädigungsmechanismen im Materialinneren. Hochspezifische Korrosionsphänomene und die grundlegenden atomaren Kriechmechanismen blendet er weitgehend aus - sein Ziel war eine praxisnahe Orientierung für die Auslegung und Bewertung von Bauteilen unter Hochtemperaturbelastung. Bei alledem identifizierte er drei Hauptursachen für Kriechschäden: (1) Plastischer Fluss - die durch Kriechen selbst verursachte zeitabhängige Verformung; (3) Strukturelle Veränderungen - thermisch oder durch Dehnung induzierte Gefügeänderungen; (3) Umwelteinflüsse - Verlust von Legierungselementen (z.?B. Entkohlung) oder Eindringen von Kontaminanten durch Diffusion und Oberflächenreaktionen. Freeman prägte mit seiner Wissensverwaltung die Art und Weise, wie Ingenieure Fragen der Sicherheit und Wartung von Hochtemperaturanlagen (Kraftwerke, Turbinen, petrochemische Anlagen) bewerteten. Drei praktische Konsequenzen standen im Vordergrund: (1) Vorhersage der Restlebensdauer (Remaining Life), (2) Entscheidungshilfe für Wartungs und Inspektionsintervalle, (3) Bewertung der Wirksamkeit von Rejuvenation Behandlungen zur Lebensdauerverlängerung.
