Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Text in Portuguese and English. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Casa das Histórias Paula Rego exhibits, for the first time, a vast collection of previously unpublished works by Paula Rego, in an exhibition that will be on display until October 26th.The exhibition entitled 1961: Order and Chaos displays works produced during the 1960s and 1970s, aiming to document and analyze the beginning of his artistic career and the impact on the Portuguese panorama of the time. The works conceived by Paula Rego during these years refer to the political situation of the country, commenting on it in a sarcastic and crude way. By highlighting this thematic orientation, the political concerns that permeated the painter's work in this period in particular, but also in later phases of her work, are deepened. In addition to Paula Rego's works, the exhibition also features works by other Portuguese artists who also adopted a critical stance towards the regime and the country's social and cultural life, while also developing their own figurative language: Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos and Eduardo Batarda. The exhibition explores the connection between different and innovative research in the field of figuration, from the 1960s onwards, and political, social and cultural commentary. This exhibition also includes works by Victor Willing (from the Casa das Histórias collection) that demonstrate the artistic and experiential complicity he established with Paula Rego. Considered by the Slade School as a spokesperson for his generation, due to his intellectual brilliance, this artist represented Paula Rego's tutelary reference, her most immediate link to the artistic panorama of the time, from the beginning of her academic training. In addition to the presentation of paintings, engravings and drawings, this exhibition will also include a documentary section, which will reinforce the evocation of the most important moments of the beginning of Paula Rego's artistic career that occurred in Portugal: her first public presentation in our country (1961), the award of a scholarship by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1962-1963) and the first solo exhibition at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes (National Society of Fine Arts) (1965). The initiatives of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation had a clear impact on Paula Rego's career, which is why this institution will be highlighted in this historical overview. The exhibition is curated by Catarina Alfaro (Chief Curator of Casa das Histórias) and Leonor de Oliveira (Researcher at the Institute of Art History at FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa).
