In den WarenkorbOriginal Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition, published in Aug 1944. Some contributions were specially written for this issue of Penguin New Writing - others are the first publication in the UK, including William Sansom, Elizabeth Bowen, Edith Sitwell, George Barker, Stephen Spender and John Lehmann. With photogravure illustrations. Please note this copy has a clipped top corner of the back cover (see scans). These wartime issues are the most fragile. ***A very good copy in pale-pink very thin card covers. The covers are clean, with some rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling - there is some edge-wear to the fore-edge of the front cover with slight loss, and the top corner of the back cover is clipped. With some rubbing and surface loss to the edges of the spine, but with no loss to the fragile spine covering. No bumps or creases. No stains. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions and no internal foxing. Inside covers slightly browned. No creases or tears. Paper stock tanned as usual. ***160mm x110mm. 160 pages. Contents: REPORT ON TO-DAY †HOME FRONT by Noel Blakiston †DUTY RATION RUN by Geoffrey Godwin *IN THE MORNING by William Sansom †THE HAPPIEST DAY by Gordon Symes †THE ISLES OF GREECE by Demetrios Capetanakis †MYSTERIOUS KÔR by Elizabeth Bowen †THREE POEMS by George Barker LADIES AND GENTLEMEN by James Stern †GIRL AND BUTTERFLY by Edith Sitwell †INCIDENT IN MAJORCA by Roland Mathias †THREE POEMS by John Lehmann †WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR? by Saul Gottlieb †TWO POEMS by H. New Writing was a popular literary periodical in book format founded in 1936 by John Lehmann and committed to anti-fascism. During the Second World War, in 1940, with New Writing's future uncertain, John Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe which was published by Penguin Books, a critical summary of the writers of the 1930s. ***Allen Lane of Penguin Books managed to secure paper for a new series which became Penguin New Writing, a monthly book-magazine, this time produced as a paperback. Penguin New Writing ran to 40 issues in total, surviving until 1950. ***First impression of the true first edition of John Lehmann's Penguin New Writing Issue 20, published in 1944. A very good clean copy, albeit with the edge-wear and clipped corner of the back cover - of interest to collectors of collectable Penguin paperbacks. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
