Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Sehr gut sg - ungelesenes mängelexemplar, gestempelt, mit leichten lagerspuren - Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 2, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: Ernest Callenbach s Ecotopia consists of the reports and diary entries of William Weston, a reporter who is actually the first person to enter the newly modelled country, consisting of Washington, Oregon and Northern California, which broke from the USA in 1980. Seen from 1974, the story is set 25 years in the future in the year of 1999. Ecotopian citizens are described as creative, free-thinking, liberal and energetic people, who place value on work in team configurations and social responsibility. William Weston provides the reader with detailed insights into the Ecotopian lifestyle, politics, sexual freedom, education, and gender relations. However, the main focus of the book is on ecological aspects. This essay is concerned with the ecological concerns and their collective realization in Ecotopia, whereas emphasis will be put on Ecotopia s food circle, food production and processing, car-less living, television and wares, Ecotopian economy, their woods, plastics, and their way of generating energy from sun and sea.

First edition, first printing, inscribed in red ink on the initial blank, "For Tee, with love, Chick". Ecotopia, a cult favourite and one of the first ecological utopias ever written, was highly influential on 1970s counterculture and the sustainability movement. A widely admired futuristic novel by the American film scholar and environmentalist Ernest "Chick" Callenbach (1929-2012), Ecotopia was strangely prescient and remarkably rational in its predictions of the ways in which toxic living could threaten health and sustainability. It was self-published in an initial run of 2,500 copies, with Callenbach remembering that "it was rejected by every significant publisher in New York. Some said it didn't have enough sex and violence, or that they couldn't tell if it were a novel or a tract. Somebody said the ecology trend was over" (quoted in the NYT). After an excerpt in Harper's Weekly was favourably received, Bantam decided to publish the next edition. Ralph Nader, who later endorsed the book in a blurb, remarked: "It came out at just the right time in terms of the environmental movement. Environmentalists had been focusing on pollution inversions, rivers catching fire because of oil slicks, things like that. His book took it to a different level of possibility. and broadened the meaning of ecology" (quoted in The Washington Post). Scott Timberg, "The Novel That Predicted Portland", New York Times, 12 December 2008; Elaine Woo, "Ernest 'Chick' Callenbach wrote 'Ecotopia,' an influential novel about an environmental utopia", The Washington Post, 25 April 2012. Octavo. Original colour pictorial wrappers, perfect bound. Lightly rubbed. A near-fine copy.

Volume pubblicato in occasione della mostra tenutasi presso l'International Center of Photography, New York 14 settembre 2006 - 7 gennaio 2007. Tavola virtuale rotonda fra: Diana Thater, Simon Nortfolk, Marine Hugonnier, Brian Wallis, Carol Squiers et al. Fotografie a colori e in bianco e nero di: Robert Adams, Doug Aitken, Wout Berger, Yannick Demmerle, Harri Kallio et al. Biografie . 8vo (cm 20x20). pp. 300. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . When the International Center of Photography launched Strangers, its first Triennial, in 2003, its curators wrote that their goal was "to demonstrate photography's incomparable richness as a visual medium--in the form of still photographs, video, sculptural objects, and installation pieces. The result is a dynamic coherence that results as much from a dialogue between individual works as from curatorial intention." This second time out, in a period of rampant natural disasters and concerns about global environmental change, they have shifted their attention from strangers, from our relationships with one another, to home, to our relationships with the earth. Ecotopia, brings readers the natural world through the eyes and lenses of some of the most interesting and engaging photographers working today. These 30 international artists shatter stereotypes of landscape and nature imagery to examine new concepts of the natural sphere occasioned by twenty-first-century technologies. They capture our destructive engagement with the environment and develop visions of our future, both better and worse. Ecotopia considers nature in the broadest sense, and offers new perspectives on the planet that sustains, enchants and, increasingly, frightens. Book.
