Mit der Veröffentlichung der Kindergarten…-Einschätz-Skala (KES) im Jahr 1997 wurde erstmals im deutschsprachigen Raum ein Instrument zur objektiven Feststellung pädagogischer Qualität in Kindergärten bereitgestellt. Das große Interesse, das dieser Skala von Fachkräften in den Einrichtungen, von Trägern, FachberaterInnen und der Jugendhilfeadministration entgegengebracht wurde und wird, macht den Bedarf an einem solchen Verfahren deutlich. 1998 erschien nach fast 20 Jahren der Anwendung die revidierte Fassung der Originalskala, der Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-R), basierend auf langjährigen Erfahrungen in den USA und zahlreichen anderen Ländern.
