Cloth. First edition. 4to, unpag., original white linen, with photograph mounted on front board. A landmark work in modern photography, the great photo-essay on East Harlem includes a brief prefatory text by Davidson, who has also signed this copy on the title page. Small tear at front pastedown where the paper was not completely glued; hint of tanning toward edges, as often, else a very good copy in the original printed plastic wrapper, with a horizontal tear to the front panel and portions of a couple of letters rubbed off.

paperback. Zustand: Molto buono (Very Good). Prima edizione (First edition). Introduction and 123 black and white photographs by Bruce Davidson. Design: Elton Robinson. Editing: Bruce Davidson . 4to (cm 30x28). pp. 130. . Molto buono (Very Good). Lievissime fioriture in prossimità del dorso (Very slight yellowings near the spine). Prima edizione (First edition). Fotolibri2 [Roth, 2004] Roth Andrew, The Open Book. A history of the photographic book from 1878 to the present. Hasselblad Center, 2004. For two years Bruce Davidson photographed one block in East Harlem. He went back day after day, standing on sidewalks, knocking on doors, asking permissions to photograph a face, a child, a room, a family. Through his skill, his extraordinary vision, and his deep respect for his subjects, Mr. Davidson's portrait of the people of East 100th Street is a powerful statement of the dignity and humanity that is in all men. After military service, in 1957, Davidson worked as a freelance photographer for Life Magazine and in 1958 became a full member of Magnum Photos. From 1958 to 1961 he created such seminal bodies of work as The Dwarf, Brooklyn Gang, and the Freedom Rides. In 1963 the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented his work in a solo show. In 1966 he was awarded the first grant for photography from the National Endowment for the Arts, and spent two years bearing witness to the dire social conditions on one block in East Harlem.
