Paperback. Zustand: Fair. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * ONE OF ESSENCE'S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In this iconic memoir of his early days, Barack Obama "guides us straight to the intersection of the most serious questions of identity, class, and race" (The Washington Post Book World).   "Quite extraordinary."--Toni Morrison    In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father--a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man--has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey--first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother's family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father's life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.   Praise for Dreams from My Father   "Beautifully crafted . . . moving and candid . . . This book belongs on the shelf beside works like James McBride's The Color of Water and Gregory Howard Williams's Life on the Color Line as a tale of living astride America's racial categories."--Scott Turow   "Provocative . . . Persuasively describes the phenomenon of belonging to two different worlds, and thus belonging to neither."--The New York Times Book Review    "Obama's writing is incisive yet forgiving. This is a book worth savoring."--Alex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here   "One of the most powerful books of self-discovery I've ever read, all the more so for its illuminating insights into the problems not only of race, class, and color, but of culture and ethnicity. It is also beautifully written, skillfully layered, and paced like a good novel."--Charlayne Hunter-Gault, author of In My Place   "Dreams from My Father is an exquisite, sensitive study of this wonderful young author's journey into adulthood, his search for community and his place in it, his quest for an understanding of his roots, and his discovery of the poetry of human life. Perceptive and wise, this book will tell you something about yourself whether you are black or white."--Marian Wright Edelman. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. When a ninety-five-year-old World War I veteran from Utah agrees to reveal the untold details of his wartime experiences to a pediatrician from Brooklyn, an intense bond is formed between the two men, each of whom is taken on an unexpected journey in search of the truth.Dreams of My Comrades chronicles the life of Murray Jacobs, a former Navy Seabee, who served in the Pacific Theater and was treated for PTSD until his death at the age of ninety-eight. He agreed to a series of interviews, under the strict conditions that his real name could not be used, and the details of the conversations could not be disclosed to anyone until after he was dead.Murray's story is not one of heroism, nor does he portray himself as heroic in his narrative. In the course of his dialogue with the author, Murray confesses to wartime atrocities the likes of which have never before been heard. Despite his advanced age, his recollections are entirely lucid, and he describes the events of his life in vivid detail. As the conversations progress, however, the author comes to recognize the challenges involved in trying to depict history based on the account of a single elderly man. Discrepancies lead to doubts, doubts lead to disbelief, disbelief leads to investigation, and after exhausting all possible avenues of research, unanswered questions linger and tantalize. This is a unique story, one that will not only appeal to connoisseurs of history but to anyone interested in the psychology of the human condition. It is unlike any narrative ever told about a veteran of the Second World War.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. At first glance most people think that Riding the Bus 1 is for people who ride the bus. That is far from the truth. The subtitle gives you three more clues about the content of my book: saving money dreams and inspiration. My book contains 101 inspirational and motivational poems that can help an individual get ahead in life simply by believing and moving forward, without giving up until the dream comes to total fruition. This book was given birth by the fall of the economy, my educational trips to Europe and my desire to write. When the economy began to fall in 2007 many people were caught by surprise. Very few people were ready to receive a cut in pay or worse, to be laid off from work with little hope of finding a job with decent pay. I was one of those victims of mishap and being unprepared for emergencies. For two years I tried to survive with zero dollars left at the end of each month. Nevertheless, I never gave up and I launched my non-profit organization to take my students on trips to Europe. At the end of my first educational trip in spring of 2010 I realized that I couldn't continue as usual. I began to reflect that while in Europe I never had the need to drive a car. I knew that the tires on my Tacoma were bare and if I continued driving under those conditions I could cause an accident. It was then that I decided that I would ride the bus to save money to buy tires. Little did I know that I would sell my car and ride the bus for following three years. Everything happened like a miracle. It was about the third week when I was dozing off on the bus and I opened my eyes to see Chase Bank right in front of me. At the time I was making 200 dollar payments on my wife's Chrysler van and I realized I had to cut back somewhere. Like a miracle, the sale of my Tacoma would be enough to pay off the van. In the following weeks I sold my truck, took the money to pay off the van and at the end of the second month I had 700 dollars left over. I took that money and I began paying off all my debts beginning with my smallest. Aided by a program called Transforming Debt into Wealth I began my journey to debt freedom. I had no idea that all these series of events would lead to the publication of my first book and many more to come. Miracles do happen; you just have to work them out. The following two poem show how I feel about the economy and the use of credit. I suspect that people have been led to believe that it is ok to spend more than they can afford. The use of credit is destroying the world. Credit is a giant that keeps growing and growing and someday he will be so big that there won't be enough money in the world to keep it satisfied. My poems are not just about the economy. I also give my views on family, education, and faith. Chase bank (14) Appropriate name for a bank that is chasing me for my money 200 dollars a month, their Chrysler if I stop paying, they take it away. Until I finish paying, the car is not mine they keep the pink slip for keepsake they don't care that I am paying almost twice as much as the original price. The bonus checks the CEO's got we paid them with our interest payments I don't want to be chased anymore I am paying off my Chrysler, no more credit. I'm selling my Tacoma, I truly own it take the money to pay off the Chrysler save money every month to buy a new car or just stay on my limo, M-Metro. Credit Card (16) Buy now, pay later. How much later? How much more? I need credit, For the things I have accomplished, For the things I have done. I don't need credit To charge things I can't afford. I want credit for spending money wisely. A credit card that says, Accomplished teacher and educator, Accomplished father and husband. I am going to pay off All those credit cards that say I owe money to other people. I want a credit card That says, Job well done I'm going to make me one.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Although we?ve been conditioned to think ?middle aged? is practically a four-letter word, the realities of women in midlife today are far different than what our mothers experienced. Women in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s are living younger, vibrant lives. But influenced by our youth-obsessed culture, we fear that when we hit midlife, we stop being relevant and no longer have options?that it?s simply too late for us.Contradicting long-ingrained beliefs, Robi Ludwig draws on myth-busting data from scientific research and on her experience as a therapist to show midlife is not the beginning of our decline?it is actually a time to pursue our dreams. In Your Best Age Is Now, she offers specific advice on how to change our perception of this next life phase and make the best of it by:· Letting go of stress to create a more balanced life;· Identifying false thinking that is holding us back;· Taking charge of our love life and relationships;· Staying relevant in the workplace or starting new, exciting careers;· Becoming more spiritual and leading a life of gratitude; and more.Your Best Age Is Now provides the guidance you need to reject the status quo, become more ?you? than ever before, and find the kind of happiness you never thought possible.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. It's 1921 Mexico. Ne'er-do-well sea captain Dugger and his sardonic friend Nello break out of jail and set sail for a new beginning in Tahiti. Aboard are two mysterious passengers: a beautiful escapee from an Irish convent, searching for her twin brother; and a French master spy, hunting the leader of an anticolonial rebellion.
