Previously owned by Bloomsbury Group member Roger Senhouse and Waterloo battle hero Edward Cheney. New edition. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Bound with the half title. Robert Southey's 'Wat Tyler', composed when Southey was ninteen and unpublished for twenty-three years thereafter, reflects his youthful Republican opinions, with unauthorised copies such as this released in hopes of embarassing Southey, who was by that time England's Poet Laureate. With two notable previous owners: Edward Cheney (1778-1848), a British Army officer who became known as a hero of the Battle of Waterloo. His unique claim to fame was that he had five separate horses killed or wounded under him during the battle. His grave is said to be the only equestrian statue within a British church and is probably the only statue showing a dying horse in Britain. Roger Senhouse (1899-1970), an English publisher and translator best known as a member of the Bloomsbury Group. The private letters and writings of fellow member Lytton Strachey reveal that Senhouse was his (last) lover, and with whom in the late "20s and early 1930s he had a sado-masochistic sexual relationship. Southey's verse romance, written in Spencerian stanzas, was partially based on an incident related in An Account of the Abipones, by the Catholic missionary Martin Dobrizhoffer, which had been anonymously translated, from Latin into English, by Sara Coleridge in 1822. Southey was himself credited with translating the Austrian's work, in an edition that appeared in 1821.…
