Don Luigi Savaré è un presbitero della diocesi di Lodi, nato il 15 agosto 1878 e morto il 22 marzo 1949. Considerato santo ancora in vita, fu proclamato tale alla fine dei suoi giorni: è morto poverissimo e amatissimo dal popolo e dal clero. Molti sono gli scritti su questo sacerdote, ma una biografia completa non è mai stata pubblicata. Don Luigi riceve l'ordinazione presbiteriale nel giugno 1903. Si distingue subito per una spiccata sensibilità nei confronti dei problemi sociali: toglie dalla fame numerose famiglie, esprimendo forme squisite di personale e riservata carità, e partecipa alla fondazione dell'Accademia Leone XIII, che riunisce i chierici e i preti maggiormente sensibili alle problematiche sociali. Trasferito a Lodi nel 1909 ha l'incarico di seguire l'oratorio cittadino. A quest'opera si dedica per il resto della sua vita. Nel periodo della guerra, la struttura si apre anche alla cura dei militari di stanza a Lodi. Non manca di intrattenere una fitta corrispondenza con i suoi giovani chiamati alle armi. All'intenso lavoro pastorale corrisponde un'intensa vita contemplativa a cui don Savaré cerca di introdurre i suoi giovani: molti di essi seguono la strada della consacrazione religiosa e del ministero sacerdotale: grande è il suo amore per la Vergine, alla quale ama rivolgersi con l'appellativo di Maria Ausiliatrice, e totale è la sua passione per Gesù Eucaristia, che veglia molte ore, sia di giorno che di notte Prefazione di Monsignor Giacomo Capuzzi.…

It is a story of an ancient people who had come relatively late to democracy and who failed to respond to its ideals. The men of the Risorgimento had bequeathed to Italy all the outward forms of a modern democracy but the one basic thing they were unable to impart was its spirit. Thus in a land weakened by war, ravaged by ideological ardours, embittered by poverty and rendered aimless in its search for national identity, democracy went to the wall. It comes as no surprise that those political expressions which scorned the outward form of democracy were amongst the first victims of dictatorship. Thus the old Italian socialist movement was rent asunder with disunity and all its forms dissolved before the Duce. Yet it is a surprise that Sturzo's party, which formally at least was dedicated to both the form and spirit of democracy, was so quickly smitten with the rest.
