Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps. 8vo. pp 211. Original publisher's red patterned thin card covers with title label and 'Uncorrected Proof Copy' notice pasted to cover. The rare suppressed true first edition in proof form. This edition was subsequently withdrawn before publication, rewritten, and reissued in 1970. due to libel claims from a Labour MP Tom Skeffington Lodge, who although portrayed as a woman, sued (and won at great cost to King) under stringent libel laws. The offending passages are present including the statement from Attlee-- "I hope that you get what you deserve." Loosely inserted is a good TYPED SIGNED LETTER from Francis King on Brighton headed notepaper (undated but circa 1969/70 with an old lettered phone number)to his friend the critic Neville Braybrooke mentioning the book will be coming out soon 'and I pray there will be no more trouble from Skeffington Lodge.what a lot that novel has cost me in money and agony of mind and time.I hope it was worth it." The lettered is initialled in ink "F." Very good with some light wear.
