Condition Report: Very Good. The book is bound in its original pu…blisher's blind-stamped cloth, which remains tight and structurally sound. The cloth exhibits mild shelf-wear, with some minor fraying to the corners and light rubbing and crushing to the spine ends. The front board shows faint, scattered scuffing, though the central blind-stamped portrait remains sharp. The spine is slightly sunned, darkening the gilt lettering, though it remains entirely legible. Internally, the front paste-down bears a prominent, vintage ink ownership signature traversing the publisher's printed advertisements. The endpapers display moderate age-toning and scattered foxing, typical of the era and paper stock, yet the internal hinges are firm and uncracked. A well-preserved, unrestored example of this mid-nineteenth-century binding. Catalogue Note: This volume constitutes the first Cabinet Edition of the 'First Division: Pure Sciences' from the monumental Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, issued in crown octavo to reach a broader readership. Samuel Taylor Coleridge originally drafted this foundational treatise on method to serve as the structural and philosophical guide for the entire encyclopaedia project. The binding is a classic, untouched example of mid-Victorian publisher's cloth, heavily blind-stamped with an ornate border and a central portrait bust. While the text itself was widely distributed as part of the encyclopaedia's serialisation, surviving individual volumes in their original publisher's bindings are increasingly uncommon on the open market. The volume retains its original publisher's advertisements on the endpapers, overlaid with a striking contemporary ownership signature. Samuel Taylor Coleridgeâs Introductory Dissertation on the Science of Method serves as a profound philosophical gateway to the organisation of human knowledge. Originally conceived as the intellectual blueprint for the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, Coleridgeâs essay argues for a unified, organic approach to science and literature, rejecting arbitrary classification in favour of underlying principles. This work remains a vital piece of Romantic-era philosophy, reflecting Coleridgeâs lifelong pursuit of intellectual harmony and his deep engagement with the categorisation of the sciences.
