First edition. First edition. In later hard paper, title vignette on spine. 48 p. Early 19th century toxicological and botanical study of Java and Southeast Asian plants. This work by Alire Raffeneau-Delile examines various poisonous plants from Java and other regions. The focus is on the Upas tieuté (Antiaris) and other species of the Strychnos genus, such as nux vomica, Strychnos ignatii, and clearing-nut tree. Raffeneau Delile contributed to botany and medicine through his studies of exotic flora. The dissertation discusses the toxicological effects, botanical characteristics, and potential medicinal uses of these plants, reflecting the period's interest in both the dangers and therapeutic potential of natural substances. Alire Raffeneau Delile (17781850), was a French botanist and physician, who made significant contributions to the study of exotic plants, particularly through his participation in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, where he collected and documented numerous plant species, adding valuable knowledge to European botany. Following his return to France, Raffeneau Delile held academic positions at the University of Montpellier and the University of Paris, where he continued his research and teaching in botany. He also held the title of Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of New York. His work remains influential in botany and pharmacology, particularly his studies on the medicinal and toxic properties of plants from various parts of the world. This dissertation, printed by Didot Jeune, provides valuable insights into early 19th-century toxicology and the medicinal applications of plants, marking an important contribution to the scientific literature of the time.
