Indeed, 76 papers were submitted, from 24 di erent countries (13 European and 11 non European), con rming the international status of the conference. Once reviewed, 45 papers were accepted for publication in the present LNCS volume. In all, 23 papers were scheduled for oral presentation in single-track sessions, and 22 papers were presented as posters, with preliminary plenary sessions with very short presentations of these posters. Three invited speakers gave lectures on topics ranging from connected elds to the theoreticalfoundations of discrete geometry:Dinesh Manocha (U- versityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHill,USA),UllrichKo the(UniversityofH- delberg, Germany) and Jean-Pierre Reveilles (University of Auvergne, France). Building on the experience of the previous editions, this edition was the - casion to remodel the paper selection process in order to improve the overall quality of the conference. These changes were based on an update and red- nition of the topics covered by the conference, in such a way that most of the present-day works in discrete geometry naturally t in one topic. The domains of discrete geometry and computer imagery are closely related. Discrete geometry provides both theoretical and algorithmic models for the p- cessing, analysis and synthesis of images; in return computer imagery, in its variety of applications, constitutes a remarkable experimentational eld and is a source of challenging problems. The number of returning participants, the arrival each year of contributions from new laboratories and new researchers, as well as the quality and originality of the results have contributed to the success of the conference and are an - dication of the dynamism of this eld. The DGCI has become one of the major conferences related to this topic, including participating researchers and la- ratories from all over the world. Of the 41 papers received this year, 24 have been selected for presentation and 7 for poster sessions. In addition to these, four invited speakers have contributed to the conference. The conference was organized by the laboratory SIC ( Signal, Image, Communications ) of the University of Poitiers, Centre National de la Recherche Scienti que and the Technical Committee 18 of the International Association for Pattern Recog- tion. DGCI 2005 was sponsored by the Faculty of Science, the University of Poitiers, the Conseil G en eral de la Vienne and the Region of Poitou-Charentes. The aim of the conference was to present recent advances in both theoretical aspects and applications in discrete geometry. This year s conference was organized in combination with the 5th Workshop B on Graph- ased Representations in Pattern Recognition,April 11 13, 2005 also organizedinPoitiers.TheworkshopGbRaimsatusinggraph-basedstructuresin image analysis. There is a strong connection between the community interested in the GbR workshop and the discrete geometry community. For this reason, for the rsttime,boththeworkshopandtheDGCIconferencewereorganizedin the same place, with a common session of four papers, two submitted to GbR and two to DGCI. The DGCI conference attracted again for this edition many excellent papers, with 53 submitted papers from 21 countries.
