Der englische Geistliche, Mathematiker und Musiker William Holder, stammend aus Nottinghamshire (gestorben 1696), wurde 1642 Pfarrer und später Canonicus der Kirche St. Paul in London. Er war auch Mitglied der engli…schen Societät (Royal Society) und der erste, der einen Taubstummen reden lehrte. In Holders Schrift über die Zeit versucht er die Mängel des Julianischen Kalenders zu erklären und zeigt die Methoden der Reform auf. In Engand wurde der Gregorianische Kalender erst 1752 eingeführt. Mittlerweile war die Zeitverschiebung zwischen Julianischem und Gregorianischem Kalender auf etwas mehr als elf Tage angewachsen. Durch diese Anpassung verschwanden elf Tage aus der Zeitrechnung (der 3. September bis 13. September 1752). - Die ersten Blätter schwach wasserrandig. Also a list of the present governors of the garisons of England; and of all the lord lieutenants, and high sheriffs of all those counties adjacent to the coasts. Lastly, the wages of officers and seamen serving in his Majesty's fleet at sea per month. Collected by Thomas Adamson, master-gunner of his Majesty's train of artillery, anno 1673. Pamphlet, small folio, approximately 280 x 185 mm, 11 x 7¼ inches, pages: [4], 1-16, bound in paper wrappers. Title page slightly marked, upper wrapper has small hole repaired on verso, pinhole to lower wrapper, occasional tiny fox spot otherwise a very good copy. ESTC R7897. Thomas Digges was a member of parliament from 1572 and again in 1584. His military career was with the English forces in the Netherlands from 1586 to 1594. The modern state of the Netherlands came into existence with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1579. Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester was named governor-general of the Netherlands in 1586 and Dudley appointed Digges to be master-general of his army to assist him in the campaign. ESTC T112929, recording 9 copies. Not in Oxford, and Boston, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia only in America. An Irish mathematical work by t…he Quaker schoolmaster and printer Samuel Fuller (d.1736), which he first published in Dublin, from the Globe and Scales in Meath Street, in 1730, and again in 1736. A London printing followed in 1751, and this 4th and last edition was issued by his former assistant and fellow Quaker Isaac Jackson, 1705-72, who purchased Fuller's printing business following the death of his widow in 1737. This is the first edition to identify Fuller as the author. Samuel Fuller was 'the first consistent printer for Irish Quakers. who, probably as a result of having to obtain school-books, emerged around 1720 as bookseller, began commissioning books, and in 1726 was advertising in the Dublin Weekly Journal, titles that he had for sale. Leading edges gilt; inner dentelle gilt. Marbled endpapers. First English edition of this rare work, containing an account of the failed invasion led by the young king of Portugal, Dom Sebastian, to the north of Africa, his defeat and death, and the political unrest that ensued. - Sebastian, the 24 year-old King of Portugal, invaded Morocco in 1578 with an army of 18,000 men. The army was crushed by the forces of Marwan Abd al-Malik I Saadi at the battle of Alcacer Quibir and King Sebastian was killed. The fact that he had left no successor paved the way for a series of impostors claiming the throne, only to be captured and executed (ultimately, the Spanish king would accede to the throne of Portugal). Teixeira's work narrates the machinations of the fourth such impostor, a Calabrian by the name of Marco Tullio. - Bound for the Portuguese politician and entrepreneur Sebastião Pinto Leite (1815-92), Conde de Penha Longa. Bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection Library of Dr. & Mrs. Howard R. Knohl to pastedown. Joints of the fine binding slightly rubbed. Lightly browned throughout; title-page and verso of final leaf lightly dustsoiled. Overall in excellent condition. Rare at auction, the last copy being sold in 1991. - BM-STC 23864. OCLC 32330439.
