Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: 1. A poetics of anticolonialism/Robin D.G. Kelley. 2. Discourse on colonialism/Aime Cesaire. 3. An interview with Aime Cesaire/Rene Depestre. Notes. "This classic work, first published in France in 1955, profoundly influenced the generation of scholars and activists at the forefront of liberation struggles in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Nearly twenty ears later, when published for the first time in English Discourse on Colonialism inspired a new generation engaged in the civil rights, black power and antiwar movements. Aime Cesaire eloquently describes the brutal impact of capitalism and colonialism on both the colonizer and colonized, exposing the contradictions and hypocrisy implicit in western notions of "progress" and "civilization" upon encountering the "savage", "uncultured", or "primitive". He reaffirms African values, identity, and culture, and their relevance, reminding us that "the relationship between consciousness and reality is extremely complex. It is equally necessary to decolonize our minds, our inner life, at the same time that we decolonize society". " (jacket).

Erstausgabe
Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First American Edition. First American edition, first printing, hardcover issue. 79 pp. Bound in publisher's orange cloth lettered in black on spine. Near Fine with light rubbing to extremities and light toning to contents; binding misglued so that textblock leans forward. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with sunned spine panel, light soiling and edgewear, and tiny puncture to rear flap fold. The surprisingly uncommon first English translation of Aime Cesaire's important anti-colonialist work. The Martiniquan poet and politician cofounded the Negritude movement, which drew on the African roots of the Black diaspora to establish a shared identity. He taught Frantz Fanon at the Lycee Schoelcher and served as mayor of Fort-de-France for 56 years, but he never could convince his compatriots to declare their independence from France.
