Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. 1st printing. 168pp. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. "'Poetry today,' Stanley Kunitz once remarked, 'has become easier to write but harder to remember.' As many poets have abandoned the traditional structures of verse, freedom has been gained but much else has been lost. Contemporary poetry began to seem the possession of those who wrote it rather than those who read it. [] THE DIRECTION OF POETRY is a showcase of verse written since 1975 by poets of several nations and of all ages, poems that flourish in traditional forms, handled by poets who are dedicated to the sort of poetry we can remember. The good news is that rhyme and meter are back. This anthology proves it by sampling the work of sixty-seven poets, many of them young, from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and the West Indies. It relishes the delight of regularity and points to a new direction. Most important of all, it will give enormous pleasure to the reader who has of late been encouraged to forget that poetry is something to be enjoyed. [] As Robert Richman says in his editor's note: 'This anthology contains the work of poets sharing a similar aesthetic perspective. It does not intend to be entirely representative of the times. It celebrates the work of a particular group of poets--the most important group to have emerged in the last fifteen years.' [] Howard Nemerov, poet laureate of the United States, says, 'I feel honored to be in such good company,' and May Swenson writes, 'It is a good deed to publish such an anthology, signaling the swing away from minimalism and other fads--fads that amount to anti-poetry. Just what we need now.'" [jacket copy] The 76 poets include Heaney, Hecht, Bishop, Merrill, Moss, Salter, Hollander, Muldoon, Warren, Pinsky, Davison & Wilbur, lots more. Pristine hardcover w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in an intact As New jacket.…

JISC (1 copy only, at the Royal College of Music, London. Not in Jähns. Der Freischütz premiered in Berlin at the Schauspielhaus on 18 June 1821. "[It] was the culmination of an important phase in Weber's struggle to realize his conception of German opera. His idea of combining the resources of drama, music and the visual aspect of theatre in a unified art work was only partly realized in Der Freischütz; but, owing much to the example of French opera, he moved far beyond the limitations of Singspiel as it was practised by the majority of his German contemporaries. Along with Spohr (Faust, 1813) and Hoffmann (Undine, 1816), who had similar aims, he attempted, with considerable success, to express the essential elements of the drama in his music. Like them, Weber used tonality, musical motif, orchestral colour and various formal and structural devices." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, [Weber] sought through his works, words, and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music, and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt." Michael C. Tusa in Grove Music Online This rare edition, representing the 10 November 1824 production at Drury Lane, consists of the overture and 17 individually-issued numbers, each with separate caption title, price, pagination, and (in some cases) named singers.…
