Original printed publisher's boards with paper spine label and advertising list on back. Textblock untrimmed, but all pages opened. About 2/3 of spine label in place, the bared crown and foot of the sewn gatherings were coated, probably early in the volume's life, with a glossy solidifying glue. Very mild foxing throughout. Dr. Johnson's famous tale inspired several sequels. Ellis Cornelia Knight (1757-1837) moved among the British great and good throughout her life, and published her Dinarbas anonymously in 1790 when she and her mother faced genteel impoverishment in Italy. She would eventually return to England in the company of Lady Hamilton and Lord Nelson-high-minded Miss Knight was somewhat alarmed at their amours-and later became a Companion to Princess Charlotte. Dinarbas was a success in its day. The title character is the warrior son of a castellan in whose fortress Rasselas's party takes shelter at the start of Knight's sequel. By the end of the tale, after adventures both military and sentimental, he receives the ultimate in praise from Rasselas: "To thee, Dinarbas, we owe the tranquillity of the empire; and in thy friendship I have found more than a recompense for all my searches after happiness." One can just imagine the harrumphing of Dr. Johnson.

Ellis Cornelia Knight (17571837) was a writer and painter who socialized with many of the notable personalities of the late reign of George III: Horatio Nelson, Lord and Lady Hamilton, the Prince Regent, the Princess of Wales, and the Princess Charlotte. Miss Knight published 5 works in her lifetime: in 1790:'Dinarbas', a continuation of a work by Samuel Johnson; in 1792, 'Flaminius', a novel in letters about Rome; in 1805, 'A Description of Latium or La Campagna di Roma' with her own etchings; in 1812, 'Translations from the German in Prose and Verse;' and in 1833 'Sir Guy de Lusignan, a Romance'. At her death she left behind an incomplete autobiography and a journal. In publishers original paper covered boards. Externally sound. Boards with some rubbing. Wear to the spine, and corners are bumped. Copperplate ink inscriptions to front free-endpaper and title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mildly age-toned, with some scattered spotting, particularly to first and last few pages. Good. book.

Small 12mo, pp. vii, [1], 240; engraved portrait frontispiece and added title page; publisher's brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine; spine head chipped; upper hinge cracked; uncut textblock very good and sound. A reimpression of Allman's 1825 edition. Fleeman 59.4R/140, although with an alternate printer's colophon reading "W. Lewis, Printer, 21, Finch-Lane, London".

Hall. The anonymous continuation by Ellis Cornelia Knight (her first book) of Samuel Johnson's Rasselas (1759) - "Sir John Hawkins, in his life of Dr. Johnson, says, 'that the writer had an intention of marrying his hero, and placing him in a state of permanent felicity.' This passage suggested the idea of the continuation now offered, with the greatest diffidence, to the reader"; dedicated to the Queen, to whom the author (Nelson's poet laureate) was appointed companion in 1805.

In full calf's leather with gilt rules on front and gilt decorations and titles on a five compartment spine. Partial gilt dentelles on board edges. All edges marbled, matching marbled endpapers. (Boards are a little worn, with leather rubbed on corners and particularly around a sunned spine). The tissue-guard is browned, fragile and partially detached, and the first and last few leaves show some faint, occasional spotting.
