Bereits wenige Jahre nach der Markteinführung der CD 1982 wurde das digitale Medium populärer als die Vinyl-Schallplatte; allein in den USA wurden 1983 etwa 30.000 CD-Player und 800.000 Audio-CDs verkauft. 1988 wurden erstmals 100 Millionen Audio-CDs pro Jahr produziert. Anfang der 90er-Jahre verschwanden LPs dann größtenteils aus den ehemaligen Schallplattenläden . Millionen von Käufern ersetzten ihre teilweise jahrzehntelang aufgebauten Schallplattensammlungen durch Audio-CDs und ermöglichten der Musikindustrie so Rekordumsätze nach Jahren der Rezession. Das Boomjahr der deutschen Musikindustrie war 1997, als die Branche rund 2,6 Milliarden Euro erwirtschaftete. In Deutschland werden Audio-CDs zumindest steuerrechtlich nicht als wertvolle Kulturgüter betrachtet; für Audio-CDs gilt ein Mehrwertsteuersatz von 19 Prozent, während dieser für Bücher und Noten bei 7 Prozent liegt. Etwa seit der Jahrtausendwende beklagen die Plattenfirmen jedoch wieder zurückgehende Umsätze. Die Umsatzeinbrüche liegen bei bis zu zehn Prozent; deutsche Plattenfirmen verloren 2003 sogar ein Fünftel ihres Umsatzes; im Jahr 2002 war der Umsatz bereits um mehr als elf Prozent auf weniger als zwei Milliarden Euro zurückgegangen.
