Staining at beginning and end of the book, and occasionally in the text. Book label and blind stamp of Benjamin Duprat (1802-64), renowned librarian and bookseller in Paris. First edition of the first substantial work on the Sundanese language. It is spoken in the southern part of the Banten province, and most of West Java and eastwards as far as the Pamali River in Brebes, Central Java. Jonathan Rigg was an English tea-planter at Djasinga in Western Java, and a member of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences. He compiled this notable dictionary with the help of a native named Raden Nata Wiréja according to the preface. Scarce. Zaunmüller 371.

The author, Jonathan Rigg (1809-1871), was a British trader, amateur geologist, historian and lexicographer. This is his magnum opus. Sundanese is the principal language of the western half of Java. The translations of the Sundanese words often have an encyclopaedic character. Published in the society's Verhandelingen, being the complete Volume XXIX. Uncut. Old stamp on front board, first journal title, and title page; spine cover ends abraded, book block broken, boards a bit soiled and detached, but otherwise in very good condition, all leaves clean. Partly printed on bleu paper. Uncommon.
