First edition of the work was begun by Halkett, librarian of the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh; it was completed after his death by Laing, librarian of New College, Edinburgh and was edited by Laing's daughter Catherine. The spines of the four volumes are lightly rubbed at the raised bands, at the tops of the spines and along the bottom edges. Internally very good with very light scattered fox spotting. Previous owner's bookplate, Herbert Henry Raphael, inside each front cover.

Nine volumes, complete. The second, best, and most complete edition. The standard bibliography of pseudonymous and anonymous books in English from the 15th century until 1950. A monumental reference, covering over 65,000 books. No serious dealer or collector of English books can afford to be without this work. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth. The bindings of the earlier volumes are a bit worn, but still completely solid. There is a little faint spotting here and there (as always) because of impurities in the paper, but the paper is generally clean and bright. Overall an excellent set, with no real defects. Very, very scarce in such fine condition.

Johnson.After Samuel Halkett's death in 1871, the materials he collected for a dictionary of anonymous literature were given to John Laing. Laing enlarged the collection but passed away before the work was published. The work was then edited and published by Laing's daughter.This set comprises volumes I to VI (published 1926 to 1932) of the main volumes, which contain the alphabetically arranged dictionary, with a supplement to the rear of volume VI. In addition, this set includes volume VII (published 1934), which contains the index (by authors, initials and pseudonyms) and the second supplement. Externally, smart, with very light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are untrimmed but very bright and clean. Dust wrappers are generally smart, with light chipping to the wraps, more so to the head and tail of the spine, and closed tears to the flyleaves. Light marks to the wraps and sunning to the spines of the wraps. Scattering of spots to the spines of the wraps to volumes II-VI. Two tape repairs to the rear of the wrap, and a loss to the tail of the spine of the wraps, to volume IV. Ink mark to the front of the wrap to volume V. Fine. book.
