This diary is one of the best sources on British politics in the eighteenth century, containing gossip of the government and significant figures within society at that time. George Dodington was a political and nobleman. He was close friends with Frederick the Prince of Wales, the father of George III. Dodington was a collector, with his house in Hammersmith being the popular salon of political and cultural discussions. He was said to be part of a spy ring, collecting information about Jacobite activities, and has been described as an indefatigable schemer. His dairies were published by Henry Penruddocke Wyndham, after his papers were left to him upon his death. In the original full calf binding. Externally, the front board may detach with further handling. Light marking to the boards, being significantly heavier to the rear board. Patches of rubbing to the spine, with some surface cracks and loss to the head and the tail. Light bumping to the extremities. Discolouration to the endpapers.Internally, firmly bound. These diaries were published posthumously twenty years after Dodington's death by Henry Penruddocke Wyndham, after his papers were left to him upon his death. In the original mottled calf binding. Externally, spine and extremities are a little discoloured. Joints are cracked, a little heavier to the front joint. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with only the occasional spot. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the spine, 'Richard Millas'. Good. book.

The first Dublin edition, published the same year as the UK first edition.George Bubb Dodington, 1st Baron Melcombe PC (1691 July 28, 1762) was an English politician and nobleman. Christened simply George Bubb, he acquired the surname Dodington around the time his uncle George Dodington died in 1720 and left him his estate. Enormously rich, he became a friend of Frederick, Prince of Wales, who took advantage of their acquaintance to obtain loans that helped clear his debts, and, on being thrown out of St James's Palace by his father, King George II, moved into a London house belonging to Dodington. Dodington is said to have been involved in a spy-ring, collecting valuable information about Jacobite activities. In 1761, following the accession of Frederick's son to the throne as George III, he was created Baron Melcombe. His diary, published posthumously in 1784 by Henry Penruddocke Wyndham, is a valuable historical source.Bound in full contemporary calf. Bound in full contemporary calf.
