From the preface: 'The incidents narrated in this work have been carefully extracted from the note-book of the Baron de -----, who for several years acted as a judge during the reign of Napoleon. From it I have selected the following narratives, which contain incidents of real life that must arouse and amuse, while they impress the conviction that 'truth is stronger [sic] than fiction'. Stories include 'The Haunted House', 'The Poisoned Creece', 'An Irish Ghost Story', 'The Phrenologist', 'Burying Alive', and others. Born in Calcutta, Addison, 1805-1876, entered the military in the late 1820s, but by 1830 was writing dramas and farces for the London stage. Along with writing around 60 plays throughout his career, he contributed many articles to various magazines and newspapers, and wrote upwards of 10 novels and stories.

Addison was the author of about sixty dramas and farces on the London stage, and authored a further twelve novels and stories.This collection of short stories is claimed to be 'carefully extracted from the note-book of the Baron de -----, who for several years acted as a judge during the reign of Napoleon'.
