A little edgewear to folding map in vol. IV. This 1875-79 edition of Pepys' diary is the first edition of the first near-complete deciphered version of the text by Mynors Bright. The diary had been imperfectly deciphered and partially published in 1825, but Bright was the first to identify the specific shorthand system used by Pepys; this first edition of his version includes the majority of the original diary, excluding passages Bright 'regarded as unprintable' (ODNB). Each vol. has armorial bookplate to verso of front free endpaper of 'Maharaja Jam Shiri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, G.B.E., K.C.S.I', with owner's signature, 'Maharaja Jamsaheb / of / Nawanagar / February 1923 Staines'; each vol. also has armorial bookplate to inside rear board, of 'The Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar / Jamnagar'. Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, 1872-1933, maharaja jam sahib of Navanagar (known as Ranjitsinhji or Ranji), ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar from 1907 to 1933 and world-famous cricketer, widely regarded as among the greatest batsmen of all time. Ranjitsinhji played for Cambridge University, Sussex, and test cricket England; 'within five years of first playing seriously, he had become the world's leading batsman and forced a general reappraisal of tactics' (ODNB). 'An elegant player, who scored runs with style and apparent ease, he was hugely popular, attracting the same sort of mass following as had W. G. Grace, with bats, matchboxes, hair restorers and chairs named after him' (Huggins, The Victorians and Sport, 2004, 245). His brilliance on the cricket pitch was established despite the fact that 'he played, for the most part, on the brink of poor health and penury' (ODNB): Ranjitsinhji's claim to the rulership of Nawanagar was tenuous and his access to funds often likewise until, in 1906, he was installed as jam sahib of Nawanagar on the abrupt death of the previous incumbent (permission to use the title of maharaja came much later, after considerable lobbying). Ranjitsinhji 'made full use of an agreement that he could visit Europe every four years' (ODNB), buying a house in Staines in 1912; in WWI he offered this as an army hospital for injured soldiers but was clearly back in residence by 1923, the date of the inscriptions in these vols. 'The most brilliant figure in what many believe was cricketâs most brilliant period' (Brodripp, The Croucher, 1985), Ranjitsinhji is remembered in the Ranji Trophy championship, played annually in India. Handsome set with remarkable provenance. ~Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Size: c. 500pp. per vol.
