In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. [Bond reference / philosophy] FIRST EDITION, SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY to "the first and last Inkling". Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.123; [5], blank. Bound in pictorial card covers priced at $1.75. Ink note to endpaper; "For Owen Barfield / from / Ann Boyd", with Barfield's library label to inside cover. Contents clean, spine and rear cover slightly toned. A paperback original. An unusual piece of vintage Bondiana, being a philosophical look at Fleming, Bond and the seven deadly sins, written by a Pd.D. student of Christianity and Society. The recipient, author Owen Barfield (1898-1997), described as one of the most neglected important thinkers of the 20th Century, had a profound influence on C. S. Lewis and, through his books The Silver Trumpet and Poetic Diction (dedicated to Lewis), an appreciable effect on J. R. R. Tolkien, who made use of the ideas in his writings with the theme of decline and fall in Middle-earth [Flieger 1983, pp. 35-41]. C.S. Lewis was Barfield's closest friend for over 40 years, having met as students at Oxford University in 1919. As well as being friend and teacher to Lewis, Barfield was (professionally) his legal adviser and trustee. Lewis dedicated his first scholarly book, The Allegory of Love (1936), to Barfield, and dedicated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first Narnia chronicle, to Barfield's daughter Lucy, and the third book in the series The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, was dedicated to Barfield's adopted son Geoffrey. Gilbert. Ian Fleming The Bibliography, p.611. Signed.
