Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. An Astronomical Diary: or an Almanack, for the Year of our Lord Christ 1754. Being the second year after Bissextile, or Leap-Year. In the 27th Year of the Reign of King George II. Wherein are contained the Lunations, Eclipses of the Luminaries, Aspects, Courts, spring Tides, Judgment of the Weathe…r, Sun and Moon's rising and sitting, Time of High-Water; also, an Essay on Regimen, &c. Calculated for the Meridian of Boston, New-England, Latitude 42 Degrees, 25 Min. North. By Nathaniel Ames Boston. New England. Printed by J. Draper, for the Booksellers. Softcover with no covers, as issued. Printed title page is the front cover and first page. 16 pages (4 folded and sewn sheets). Very good condition, with wide margins and little or no splitting at the spine-fold. The name 'Joe' handwritten on the front cover. Small piece missing from top corner of front. Measures 6.125 x 4.25 inches. Each month's calendar is rich with astronomical printer's devices. A few bad lines of poetry begin each month, as well. Ames' was the first American almanac, begun in 1725. It was published every year for more than half a century. Benjamin Franklin's famous almanac, begun in 1732 competed with Ames' for decades, but never surpassed it in popularity. Circulation of Ames' almanac was more than 50,000 copies, compared to closer to 10,000 for Franklin's. Both almanacs gave astronomical information. Both published essays on improvement (in this edition of Ames, it is an essay on Regimens & moderation). Both offer pithy rhymes or observations on the weather for each month. We remember Franklin's better than Ames', although the difference may not have been so clear-cut at the time. In 1754, Ames wrote: "Pride, where wit fails, steps in to our Defence, And fills up all the mighty Void of Sense, If once right Reason drives that Cloud away, Truth breaks upon us with resistless Day. Trust not your self, but your Defects know Make use of ev'ry Friend and ev'ry Foe." Franklin's 1754 effort also includes: "The first degree of Folly, is to conceit one's self wise, the second to profess it; the third to despise Counsel." which is hardly enough to set one writer on a pedestal and leave the other off entirely. But Franklin's 1754 almanac also includes: "If you'd know the value of money, go and borrow some." "The cat in gloves catches no mice." "Love thy neighbor; yet don't pull down your hedge." Please email with questions or to request photos. A very nice, clean and well preserved pre-Revolutionary imprint.
